“The Smallest Treasures”

I have a secret box under my bed.

It’s not big or sparkly—it’s just a shoebox.

But inside?

Magic.

There’s a purple rock I found at the park.

I’m pretty sure it’s from space.

A button from Grandma’s old sweater—it still smells like hugs.

A broken crayon shaped like a dinosaur.

I don’t color with it.

I just know it’s special.

Mom once said, “These are just little things.”

But I think little things matter most.

When I feel sad, I open my treasure box and remember:

the picnic where I found the rock,

the bedtime stories with Grandma,

the drawing where my dino crayon saved the day.

The Smallest Treasures

Grown-ups have money and phones.

But I have treasures.

And I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

Not even a pony.

What “Small Treasures” have been your little things to turn to feel love and gratitude?

What happens next?...(continued from Issue #33)

That pain shot up my spine again as I sat in our new-to-us vehicle with leather seats while hubby pumped the gas into it.

I screamed, “We gotta go NOW!”

The hospital was under 5 miles from our home but I have heard stories of babies being born while enroute.

I didn’t want to be one of those stories!

Where did I leave off? Oh Yeah…

Keep stress levels low because I am pregnant but…

First, I had the morning sickness which was stressful.

Second, there was all the talk of the world coming to an end due to Y2K.

Third, I was bleeding vaginally.

Fourth, MS made me a paraplegic.

Fifth, my heart rate went above 200 beats per minute.

Sixth, my husband had to be called back to the hospital because the doctors wanted to STOP MY HEART!!!!!

Seventh, my baby could die so we could save my life!

Eighth, why am I still in the hospital?

Ninth, complications for the baby just to do a test?

Tenth, waiting for the results from that radioactive isotope test!

Eleventh, what’s in the bag?

Twelfth, Oranges and needles?

Thirteenth, Do I have diabetes too?

Fourteenth, MS confirmed?

Fifteen, MS confirmed!!! How?

Sixteen, Call Mom to help?

Seventeen, How’s the baby doing?

Eighteen, What’s this pain I keep feeling?

Nineteen, Was I kicked by a horse?

Twenty, What’s next?

Twenty-One, Can I get an epidural?

Twenty-Two, What is this pain?

Twenty-Three, What does labor feel like?

Twenty-Four, Why am I wet?

Twenty-Five, Go to the hospital, really?

Twenty-Six, Are we gonna make it?

Twenty-seven, I will not get into that wheelchair.

I remembered from the Lamaze class something about once you are put in the labor and delivery bed, you will be kept in the bed.

I already spent enough time in wheelchairs over this pregnancy, so I wanted to walk to my room and stay upright for as long as possible.

My memory tells me that I had to get into the bed as soon as I got to my room so that they could check to see how far dilated I was and to put monitors on me.

I agreed to get into the bed. The OB/GYN came into the room and checked on my dilation progress. She said, “Well you are only ½ cm dilated. 10cm is full dilation. I guess we are going to wait to see what baby does. BUT if you don’t dilate further before this time tomorrow morning we may have to encourage baby to come out.”

Apparently, it is dangerous for baby to remain in the uterus without amniotic fluid for too long.

I laid there in that bed for the rest of the night, experiencing that pain up and down my spine while my husband fell asleep on the bench in the room.

At 9:30am, the OB/GYN from the practice I had been going to all of these months and the only one I never met before now was the one that came to see me.

He checked how far I was dilated and said, “Oh, you are only 2 cm dilated I will come back when you are further along.”

I said, “Wait a minute. I have been here all night, and my water broke before I got here.”

Being your best advocate is something I always encourage everyone to do!

He then instructed my nurse, that had been with me all night, to get me something to encourage my cervix to dilate more.

I agreed with this but then asked the nurse if I could also have something to help me sleep a little bit.

Demerol was the option she gave me. I wasn’t dilated enough to get the epidural I was looking forward to, but I was able to get a little rest.

The time now was 11am, it had been over 12 hours since my water broke.

I knew it was too soon for baby to be coming out, or was it?

Back to that in the next newsletter…
